Chivas Regal is a favourite at Big Chill so we were excited to hear that they were going to be hosting a pop-up directly opposite Big Chill Bar, Brick Lane.
‘The Blend’ offers drink enthusiasts the chance to discover the world of whiskey, get an insight into the blending process, as well as create their own tipple to take home. We were lucky enough to be invited down so this week the team paid a visit.
We congregated in the downstairs bar, where we were greeted by Chivas expert Lauren and treated to a Chivas 12 and ginger cocktail. We then made our way upstairs to the tasting and discovery area which very much reminded us of our school chemistry labs, full of benches, pipettes, funnels and beakers – but much more fun!
The session kicked off with Chivas Regal’s backstory before moving onto the origins and history of grain whisky and single malts from the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside and Islay. We sampled each of them and were tutored on preserving the individual tasting notes, which aided us when it came down to making our own blend. We each started with 95ml of grain before developing our own flavours. Once we were happy with the taste it was time to name our individual blends, prize for best name was a Chivas Regal shot, so the competition was on, we eventually crowned ‘Guaranteed Hangover’ the winner.
We had a great afternoon and if you fancy yourself as a bit of a whisky connoisseur or would like to learn more under the guidance of experts, because let’s face it Chivas Regal traces its roots back to 1801, it’s home is one of the oldest operating Highland distilleries and it is the market leading scotch whisky 12 years and above in Europe so you are in the safest of hands, The Blend is well worth a visit.
